The Sachsenbrücke is a bridge over the Elbe near Pirna and with a total length of 1071.5 m it is the longest road bridge in the Free State of Saxony .

The structure is located west of Pirna at Elbe kilometer 35.62. It crosses the state road S 177 over the Elbe and to the left of the Elbe over the federal road 172 , an industrial area and the tracks of the Elbe Valley Railway, and also to the right over the district road K8774. The bridge serves to bypass the city to the west and with the federal highway 172a as a feeder to the federal highway 17 , which is why it is equipped with two lanes for each lane.

The road is straight in the bridge area. The bridge was built from 1997 to 1999 by the construction company DYWIDAG .

The bridge has two separate superstructures and consists of the two approach bridges and the main bridge. The spans for the seamless 17-span bridge are 42.5 m + 2 × 52.0 m + 53.0 m + 54.0 m + 56.0 m + 54.22 m + 46.28 m + 55.5 m + 65.0 m + 90.0 m + 134.0 m + 90.0 m + 65.0 m + 2 × 58.0 m + 46.0 m, which results in a total span of 1071.5 m.

The 479.5 m long foreland bridge on the left Elbe consists of two single-cell box girder cross-sections made of prestressed concrete with a constant construction height of 2.6 m. The 176.0 m long foreland bridge on the right Elbe is designed in the same way.

The 416 m long main bridge, which is monolithically connected to them, is located between the two approach bridges. The carriageway girder, which is between 2.6 m and 3.1 m high, is a composite steel box girder with a 6.5 m wide lower flange designed as an open U-section made of steel.

Substructure and foundation

On both sides of the two river pillars under the superstructure there are 50 m long reinforced concrete semi-arches that support the superstructure. The semi-arches do not meet at the apex. Together with the superstructure, they form a so-called arch bridge that is anchored in itself (in the superstructure) . The arches have a cross section of 6.0 mx 1.4 m. The total construction height above the river pillar is 13 m.

The foreland piers, up to 13 m high, have a full cross-section with semicircular end faces. With a suit of 1:42 they have dimensions of 1.8 m × 6.5 m at the pier head. The dimensions of the pier head for the two river piers are 3.5 m × 10.4 m.

The Pirna abutment and the following pillars 6 to 13 were founded on large bored piles with a diameter of 150 cm and lengths between 5 m and 20 m. The remaining substructures have a flat foundation on gravel support layers.

Construction work

The left Elbe foreland bridge was built using the incremental launching method , the right Elbe on falsework . The assembly of the current field took place in the cantilever with a rear tie an auxiliary pylon. The construction was carried out by the companies Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG and Brückenbau Plauen.

Award

The engineering structures erected in the course of the western bypass of Pirna were awarded a “special mention” at the awarding of the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture 2006 after the winner, a wooden bridge, because they did justice to the concerns of the State Prize in an outstanding manner. The reason given by the award winner, the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior , said about the Sachsenbrücke bridge: The aim of the design was to find the simplest possible shape that emphasizes the main opening over the Elbe, but also fits well into the flat Elbe . Bringing these requirements into line was achieved by choosing a continuous, slender bridge with a supporting structure underneath the carriageway. The hollow box cross-section with constant construction height and with a flowing transition between the web surfaces and the underside of the cantilever arm, in conjunction with the large cantilever arms, creates a slim overall impression. The view under the building is preserved as far as possible. The particular attraction of this construction is that the arch shape of the historical sandstone arch bridge from 1875 could be taken up again. Through the visual relationship between the old and the new Elbe bridge, part of the structural development of the past century can be seen in the truest sense of the word .
