Sacré Coeur Graz

The Sacré Coeur Graz , also Herz-Jesu-Kloster , is located in the second district of Graz St. Leonhard and is a religious branch of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sacré-Cœur) with a private school . It is part of the international network of Sacré Coeur schools in 44 countries worldwide.

history

The monastery was founded in 1846, although construction of the main building and the church did not begin until 1851. The plans presumably came from the architect Georg Hauberrisser senior. Under the direction of Johann Guido Wolf, the house was expanded in 1897.

In 1927 and 1928, the middle and upper grades were integrated into a women's high school and a kindergarten was established on the school premises. In 1938 both elementary school and boarding school were closed, the women's high school for III. State high school for girls restructured. The nuns left Graz in 1940. After the end of the Second World War , some of the sisters returned and classes in elementary schools and women's high schools were at least partially resumed. In 1959 the elementary school was no longer an all girls' school, and in 1978 the AHS became co-educational . In 2001/02 the attic of the elementary school was expanded. In 2004, a new, more modern kindergarten building was built according to plans by the architect Gerhard Kreutzer.

Monastery building

The monastery has an irregular T-shaped floor plan. In the years 1870/71 the school building and in 1954 the boarding house wing were added. The elongated structure has a smooth facade and is bent several times on the west side, on which the church is attached. A sandstone figure of Mary and Child (late 19th century), which was created in the vicinity of Hans Brandstetter , serves as the crowning of the portal . The painting of Christ crucified in the stairway comes from the 17th century, the one in the aisle with Mary and the baby Jesus from the third quarter of the 18th century.

Monastery chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The monastery chapel of the Sacré Coeur is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . It was built in 1852 and redesigned in 1961/62 according to plans by Karl Lebwohl . The outer facade is raised from the monastery building by a risalit and structured by Corinthian colossal pilasters. The single nave longhouse consists of five bays and a flat ceiling with belt arches. Flat-arched windows are embedded in the wall.

All that remains of the original Neo-Renaissance furnishings are the organ, the stalls and the cross-path reliefs. On the choir wall there is a bronze crucifix and on the triumphal arch there are half-figures made of bronze of a Mary with child and St. Joseph. Both were made in 1962 by the artist Erwin Huber .
