Saddell ( Gaelic : Sàghadal ) is a small town in the Scottish Council Area Argyll and Bute . It is located on the east bank of the Kintyre Peninsula about ten kilometers north of Campbeltown and 36 kilometers south of Tarbert . The Saddell Water stream runs north of the village and flows east into Kilbrannan Sound . Saddell is connected to the road network by the B842.
Ragnall, the son of Somerled , king of the Hebrides , founded Saddell Monastery in 1207 . Parts of the medieval Cistercian monastery including the cemetery have been preserved to this day as ruins and can be visited. The facility is classified in the Scottish Monument Category B. The castle, which was completed in 1512, was abandoned twice in the course of its history and was finally restored in 1890.
