NA6 was an experiment at the Super Proton Synchrotron of CERN , which was conducted 1977-1987. The aim was to measure the scattering of high-energy protons and neutrons with small momentum transfers . The spokesman for the collaboration was Kay Runge from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

construction

An under 40 bar standing hydrogen sample was bombarded with neutrons. In the cylindrical, stainless steel pressure container of the sample, there were one meter long proportional counters , which in turn were surrounded by twelve scintillators . Behind the sample was a tube almost 120 meters long filled with helium . Veto counters were installed in front of and behind the tube. A neutron spectrometer concluded the course . The components of the spectrometer were a converter, a multi-wire proportional chamber system and a totally absorbing calorimeter . The converter consisted of an iron plate 3.25 centimeters thick . The calorimeter, which was built up from those and scintillators, was also based on iron plates.
