The COMPASS experiment at CERN in Geneva investigates the spin structure of the proton through deep inelastic muon - proton scattering. In particular, the spin contributions of the quarks and gluons are examined, as well as the contributions from their orbital angular momentum.

  • COMPASS stands for Co mmon M uon P roton A pparatus for S tructure and S pectroscopy.
  • COMPASS began collecting data in the summer of 2002.
