NA10

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NA10 (also DRELL-YAN ) was an experiment at the Super Proton Synchrotron of CERN that was carried out from 1978 to 1985 and completed in 1995. The aim was to accurately measure the inclusive generation of high-energy muon pairs by a strong pion beam (up to 2 × 10 9 pions). The spokesman for the collaboration was Louis Kluberg from the École polytechnique .

construction

In front of the actual spectrometer was a sample made of 12 cm tungsten, which was temporarily supplemented by a 120 cm deuterium sample. Main components of the spectrometer were a hadron - absorber a toro dialer magnetic , several hodoscopes and scintillators , and multi-wire proportional chambers

Hadron absorber

Consisting of a tungsten- uranium core, the hadron absorber ensured that beam particles that had no reaction in the sample were separated from the interesting reactions. Around the core there was a toroidal muon filter made of graphite . The entire hadron absorber was finally embedded in reinforced concrete .

magnet

The hexagonal symmetrical magnet was 4.8 meters long and had an outer radius of 2.05 meters. With an average radius of the flying particles, it had a strength of 0.28 Tesla .

Hodoscopes

A hodoscope consisting of 48 trapezodial counters before and after the magnet was used to sharpen the selection by the trigger . Another four radial hodoscopes with sixfold symmetry were equipped with 32 counters per sextant. Two of these hodoscopes were between the hadron absorber and the magnet, one between the magnet and the second trapezodial hodoscope, and one at the end of the experiment. While the first two radial hodoscopes were used to determine the angle between the muons produced, they, together with the third and fourth radial hodoscopes, allowed the determination of the transverse momentum .

Multi-wire proportional chambers

The multi-wire proportional chambers were arranged in two groups of four each. The first cluster, consisting of smaller chambers, was on the side of the magnet facing the sample, and the second cluster, consisting of larger chambers, was on the side of the magnet facing away from the sample.
