Sadie Koninsky

Sarah "Sadie" G. Koninsky (* August 1879 in Troy , New York ; † January 2, 1952 there ) was an American composer , music publisher and music teacher . She has written numerous waltzes , marches , cakewalks and rags , some under the pseudonym Jerome Hartman . She “was the first white woman to capture the spirit of African American ragtime with her Eli Green's Cake Walk , written in 1896. ”

Live and act

Koninsky, who grew up with her siblings in Troy, New York, received violin lessons as a child. In 1894 and 1895 her first compositions were published, the waltz The Belles of Andalusia and the march The Minstrel King . In 1896 Joseph W. Stern published Eli Green's Cake Walk in New York City (with a text by Dave Reed); this piece became very popular and was the first ever cakewalk by a woman composer. She took piano lessons from Harriet Brower and was hired by Stern as an arranger . In 1899 she founded the Edw music publishing company with her siblings . M. Koninsky & Brothers , who had a branch in Manhattan for a short time and published their works, such as Phoebe Thompson's Cakewalk, but also compositions by Arthur Trevelyan and Julius K. Johnson. Some of the marches written by Koninsky appeared under the male pseudonym Jerome Hartman .

During the 1920s Koninsky ran the Goodwyn Music Publishers and was increasingly active as a violin teacher.
