Saguenay [ saɡ.nɛ ] is a Canadian city in the province of Québec and the capital of the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean district . It is located on the Rivière Saguenay , 180 km north of the city of Québec and 50 km east of Lac Saint-Jean . In 2011, 144,746 people lived in Saguenay.
The economy is mainly based on the timber industry , paper production and aluminum production . Saguenay is the seat of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi University (UQAC)
structure
Saguenay was created in 2002 through the merger of the cities of Chicoutimi , Jonquière, La Baie and Laterrière and the municipalities of Canton Tremblay, Lac-Kénogami and Shipshaw. Today it is divided into three arrondissements :
- Chicoutimi (former areas of Chicoutimi, Laterrière and Tremblay);
- Jonquière (former areas of Jonquière, Lac-Kénogami and Shipshaw);
- La Baie (former area of La Baie)
