Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! is a small town ( Municipalité de paroisse ) in the Bas-Saint-Laurent administrative region of the Canadian province of Québec .
It belongs to the regional county town of Témiscouata about 53 km southeast of Rivière-du-Loup on Route 185 , which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway towards Edmundston . The rural Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! has around 1400 inhabitants.
Place name
The unusual place name gives much reason to speculate about its origin. The French-Canadian language society Commission de toponymie de Québec indicates the etymological origin of the name from Acadian French . In this French language variety , the HaHa stands for an unexpected obstacle (cf. Ha-Ha ) or a suddenly ending path; this name is said to refer to the nearby Lac Témiscouata . The explanation for the Louis is less clear. Either it is intended to commemorate the first colonist in the Louis Marquis region or Louis-Antoine Proulx, who was vicar in Rivière-du-Loup. Louis-Nicolas Bernier, who was abbot, is also being considered as a possibility. The exclamation marks in place names have become commonplace, but they are now officially used in place names. Another place with an exclamation mark in the place name is the English Westward Ho! .
