history

The first settlers came here in 1780. The parish of Saint-Placide was created in 1848 when it separated from the parish of Saint-Benoît. The new parish was undoubtedly named after the monk saint Placide , who worked here as a follower of Benedict of Nursia in the 16th century. In 1853 a post office was opened and in 1855 the parish of Saint-Placide was founded.

A jetty built in 1867 allowed Ottawa River Navigation Company ships to start trading in wheat from the area.

Odawa rivers and lakes served as trade routes for the furs. Montreal was always the goal and the starting point. The Lac des Deux Montagnes is an important part of the first major transcontinental route. From here the military, explorers, traders and missionaries started.

In the 17th century, famous explorers like Champlain and La Vérendrye also passed here. Those in charge of the city have put up memorial plaques at prominent places in the park along the lake to commemorate this time. Here you can learn more about the history of the church, the docks, navigation across the lake and the list of grands voyageurs .

The following explorers started from the banks at the church:

In 1950 the parish separated from the parish and thus founded the administrative parish of Saint-Placide, but remained surrounded by its territories. It was not until August 3, 1994 that the area was united to form the new municipality of Saint-Placide.

Saint-Placide is divided into several small quarters with the following names: la Pointe-aux-Anglais, la Baie, le secteur des Épinettes, la Côte St-Jean, la Côte Saint-Vincent, la Côte Saint-Étienne, le noyau villageois, la Concession des Éboulis et la Pointe Masson.

The community has retained the character of the farming village for the two centuries since 1780 . Even today 90% of the area is used for agriculture.
