Saint-Pol-Roux

Saint-Pol-Roux , actually Paul-Pierre Roux (born January 15, 1861 in Marseille (quartier Saint-Henri), † October 18, 1940 in Brest ) was a French symbolist, poet and forerunner of the Surrealists .

Life

In 1880 his first drama, Raphaelo le Pèleri , appeared and it was performed in Lyon. In 1882 he moved to Paris, where he failed his law exam because he preferred the bistro talks in the company of Auguste de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam or Maurice Maeterlinck to studies. 1883–1884 his first volumes of poetry , which were still strictly oriented towards the Parnassia , appeared. From 1885 he began his literary activity in the area of the symbolist schools and magazines. With Éphraïm Mikhaël , Rodolphe Darzens and Pierre Quillard he founded the symbolist magazine Pléiade , in which texts by Maeterlinck and, among other things, the Traité du verbe by René Ghil appeared. In 1891, at a banquet in honor of Gauguin and Verlaine, he made the acquaintance of Stéphane Mallarmé , who referred to him as "his son".

In 1893 the first edition of his Stations of the Procession appeared in a volume, which Rémy de Gourmont used as an opportunity to describe him as one of the “most fruitful and amazing inventors of images and metaphors”. In 1895/1896 he withdrew from Paris with his wife Amèlie and their children and stayed for a long time in the Ardennes . In 1896 the first version of the verse drama The Lady with the Scythe was created there , which, along with Villier de l'Isle-Adams Axel, is one of the most important symbolist dramas and first appeared in 1899. In 1901 he met Victor Segalen , whose ethno-poetic work he welcomed and promoted. Their correspondence has been handed down as a document of this longstanding friendship. In the same year the first volume of the expanded, three-volume edition of the Stations of the Procession , The Rose and the Thorns on the Way was published . In 1903, after a few years in Roscanvel , he finally settled in Camaret in Brittany and built his “Manoir du Boultous” there. In 1904 the second volume of the stations appeared , From the dove to the raven over the peacock , in 1907 the third volume, Die Zauberstücke der Phantasie .

In 1910, Guillaume Apollinaire requested the Cross of Honor for Saint-Pol-Roux, which he received in 1923. André Breton paid him his first visit to Camaret in 1923 , initiating his rediscovery, which culminated in the homage for Saint-Pol-Roux (1925) and a scandalous banquet in the Closerie des Lilas . In 1926, near Brest, his “Verbal Symphony” for 250 speakers was premiered at the Pointe Saint-Mathieu. In 1930 he completed Res Poetica and Der Ausflug was published in 1932 . Two years before his death, Saint-Pol-Roux was appointed President of the Académie Mallarmé .

In 1939 he met Max Jacob for the last time in Quimper , with whom he had frequented since 1928. On the night of June 24, 1940, a German Wehrmacht soldier raided his house, killing his housekeeper and injuring his daughter Divine. On October 3rd, his “Manoir” was looted and many manuscripts destroyed. Saint-Pol-Roux died in Brest on October 18, 1940. In 1944 his "Manoir de Coecilian" (after the death of his son he named the Manoir de Boultous after him) was bombed and destroyed by the Allies, a large part of his manuscripts remain missing.

“Saint-Pol-Roux deserves first place among the living, and he can rightly be honored among them as the only authentic forerunner of the so-called Modern Movement. It would be easy to show what cubism, futurism and surrealism owe to him "
