The Saint Nicholas Avenue is a main street in New York City's borough Manhattan , USA .

Location and course

Saint Nicholas Avenue runs north-south between 193rd Street and 111th Street . She runs through the districts of Washington Heights , Harlem , Hamilton Heights and Inwood . St. Nicholas Avenue is the border between the west side of Harlem and Central Harlem. Although Harlem is generally believed to extend from the East River to the Hudson River , the area west of St. Nicholas Avenue is not always counted as part of Harlem.

North of 169th Street , St. Nicholas Avenue is adapted to the street grid of Manhattan: From 170th Street it  runs parallel to Audubon Avenue to the east and from 173rd Street parallel to Wadsworth Avenue to the west . South of 169th Street, St. Nicholas Avenue runs diagonally across Manhattan's street grid. It crosses Amsterdam Avenue at 162nd Street and continues diagonally to West 148th Street . South of 148th Street, St. Nicholas Avenue runs roughly parallel to Convent Avenue , which runs one block west, to 124th Street .

South of 124th Street, St. Nicholas Avenue makes a hard diagonal bend, crosses Frederick Douglass Boulevard on 121st Street , Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard on 116th Street, and ends on Lenox Avenue just north of Central Park . This deviation from the regular street grid of the Commissioners' plan of 1811 is explained by the fact that the street had existed since the 17th century and was part of the Boston Post Road .

The intersection of St. Nicholas Avenue and Broadway at 167 Street forms Mitchell Square Park .

history

From the first days of colonial times until the late 19th century, the street was named Harlem Lane . It is said that she followed an ancient Indian route called Weekquaeskeek . The street connected Manhattan with the Spuyten Duyvil neighborhood in the Bronx. The Kingsbridge, completed in 1693, was located between Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil over the Spuyten Duyvil Creek . The Harlem Lane was as Kingsbridge Road called and was part of the old Boston Post Road , which from Lower Manhattan to New England led.

St. Nicholas Avenue was named after St. Nicholas of Myra , the patron saint of New Amsterdam since the time of the Dutch settlers .

In 2000 the street was given the additional name "Juan Pablo Duarte Boulevard" for the section between Amsterdam Avenue / West 162nd Street and the intersection with West 193rd Street and Fort George Hill by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani . The nickname was given in honor of Juan Pablo Duarte , one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic .

Local transport

The IND Eighth Avenue Line runs under St. Nicholas Avenue north of 123rd Street and is sometimes referred to as the St. Nicholas Avenue Line .
