The Sakyamuni Pagoda of the Buddha Palace Temple , also called the Sakyamuni Pagoda of the Fogong Temple ( Chinese  佛 宮 寺 釋 迦塔  /  佛 宫 寺 释 迦塔 , Pinyin Fógōngsì Shìjiātǎ ), is a tower-shaped sacred building made of wood. The sacred wooden pagoda is located in Shuozhou in the Ying district of the Chinese province of Shanxi and, with a height of 67 m, is one of the highest wooden buildings in the world. It has withstood several major earthquakes in the course of history and has become so well known that it is known colloquially as the wooden pagoda in the district of Ying ( 應 縣 木塔  /  应 县 木塔 , Yìng Xiàn Mùtǎ ). The pagoda is a hallmark of Buddhist art and Chinese architecture .

The hexagonal pagoda made of wood was founded in 1056 at the time of Liao Dynasty from Yelu Hongji ( 耶律洪基 , Yēlǜ Hongji ), Emperor Daozong (1055-1101) by the people of Kitan built. The pagoda has nine floors and there are Buddha statues on each floor. With a 4 m high base and a 10 m high spire on the roof, the pagoda was about 67 m high. The Sakyamuni Pagoda ( 釋 迦塔  /  释 迦塔 , Shìjiātǎ ) is the oldest existing wooden pagoda in China and at the same time the tallest wooden pagoda in the world. The oldest pagoda in China, however, the Songyue Pagoda , dates from 520 to 525 at the time of the Northern Wei Dynasty , is a brick building on the Song Shan near Dengfeng , a city in Henan Province . While the oldest wooden structure in China, a Buddhist temple hall in the monastery complex on Wutai Shan , comes from the middle period of the Tang Dynasty (618–907).

The Sakyamuni Pagoda of the Buddha Palace Temple (monument object: 1-71) has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1961 .
