description
In contrast to other salt lakes, condensation and precipitation can cause a small layer of water to form on the salt. The potassium content of the brine is 7–8 g / l and the lithium content 0.7–0.8 g / l.
Lithium mining
The relatively high lithium content makes it possible to the lithium from the Salar del Hombre Muerto economic gain . FMC Lithium Corp. and Rio Tinto Minerals have been operating the Tincalayu opencast mine in the central area of the salar since 1995 . The open pit is 1500 × 500 m in size and about 100 m deep. Sulphates , borates , rubidium , cesium and bromine are obtained as by-products .
