Sally Gregory Kohlstedt

Sally Gregory Kohlstedt (* 1943 ) is a science historian at the University of Minnesota .

Kohlstedt is considered an expert on American history of science, the history of natural history museums and the history of science education . She also made a contribution to gender aspects of the history of science and to the organization of women in the History of Science Society (HSS).

Sally Gregory Kohlstedt earned a bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in 1965 , a master's degree from Michigan State University in 1966, and a Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Academic positions (professorships) were: Simmons College (1971–1975), Syracuse University (1975–1989) and University of Minnesota (UMN, since 1989). At UMN, she was deputy dean for academic affairs from 1989 to 1995 , director of the Center for Advanced Feminist Studies from 1997 to 1999 , interim head of the anthropology department from 2004 to 2006 , and director of the History of Science program from 2008 to 2013 Technology and 2013/14 managing provost and dean for postgraduate studies . Guest professorships and research stays have taken her to Harvard University (1982), the University of Melbourne (1983), Cornell University (1989), Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (1997), the California Institute of Technology (2004), the University of Auckland (2008), the Smithsonian Institution (2014) and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (2015).

In 1989 Kohlstedt was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , in whose institutions she has held several functions - among other things, she was a member of the Board of Directors in 2001 . The HSS, of which she was president in 1992/93, has honored her several times: 2013 for her book Teaching Children Science with the Margaret W. Rossiter History of Women in Science Prize , 2015 for her outstanding teaching with the Joseph H. Hazen Education Prize and 2018 for her life's work with the George Sarton Medal .

Sally Gregory is married to the geoscientist David Kohlstedt .
