The salt tooth grid ( Odontites litoralis ) is a plant species from the genus of the tooth grid ( Odontites ). The facultative semi-parasitic plant occurs in Central Europe.

description

The salt tooth rust is a 5 to 40 (rarely up to 60) cm high, herbaceous plant that is often unbranched or forms up to six pairs of branches. The branches are at an acute angle (between 20 and 40 °). An inhibition zone in front of the inflorescences is usually missing or consists of only one (or more rarely two) nodes. The leaves are three to nine times longer than wide, somewhat fleshy and blunt at the tip.

The racemose inflorescences consist of four to 20 (rarely up to 30) flowers , which are loosely arranged. The bracts are 2.5 to 5.5 times as long as they are wide. The flowers are 9 to 12 mm long. The calyx reaches a length of 4.5 to 6 mm, the calyx lobes are broadly triangular. The crown is colored purple, pink or pale pink. The stylus projects throughout the flowering period does not go beyond the crown. The capsule fruits are up to 9 mm long and up to 5 mm wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence and locations

The species is widespread on the coasts of Finland , western Estonia and the western islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa , southern Sweden , southern Norway , Denmark and northeast Germany (on Rügen up to the mouth of the Oder) and in the north and west of Scotland .

The locations are at altitudes between 0 and 100 m on salt and brackish water meadows , especially in the Juncus gerardii zone. The species is less common on rocky coasts. It is a character species of the Armerion maritimae association.

Systematics

Within the genus, the species is classified in the species group around the spring tooth rust ( Odontites vernus agg. ). In addition to the salt tooth grid and the spring tooth grid , the red tooth grid belongs to this group.

Two subspecies are distinguished within the species:

  • Odontites litoralis ssp. litoralis
  • Odontites litoralis ssp. fennicus Markl. : It occurs on the coast of southern Finland and on the Estonian islands of Dagö and Ösel .
