List of savings banks in Austria

The Salzburger Sparkasse Bank AG was in 1855 founded and since 1996 wholly owned subsidiary of First Bank . In 1992 the Salzburger Sparkasse merged with the Sparkasse Braunau am Inn and in 1993 with the Sparkasse Mattighofen . Since then, it has been represented with 60 branches not only in the federal state of Salzburg , but also in neighboring Upper Austria . The Salzburger Sparkasse is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks and the Austrian savings bank association.

history

The Salzburger Sparkasse was founded on December 9, 1855. A “founding association” was brought into being by the citizens of Salzburg with the aim of creating a “Spar-Casse” based on the Viennese model of the “First Austrian Spar-Casse” (founded in 1819). On January 1st, 1856, the first Sparkasse bar in Salzburg's town hall started its business operations under the motto: “work, collect, multiply”. With regard to the “common good”, it was ensured from this point on that small businesses in the region were given cheap loans and that even small people had the opportunity to make individual provisions.

Charitable projects

The city of Salzburg supported the establishment of a savings bank from the start. Six years after it was founded, the city took over the Vereinssparkasse, which became the municipal savings bank for 130 years. An era began in which a large part of the surpluses of the Salzburger Sparkasse were made available for non-profit regional projects based on the motto “From Salzburgers for Salzburgers”. For example, the Salzburg Music Festival, the forerunner of the Salzburg Festival , was brought into being with their help. The building of the Salzburger Landestheater in 1893 and the building of the Mozarteum in 1910 were also realized with the support of the Salzburger Sparkasse. The design of the Volksgarten as an amusement park for the population and the expansion of schools, kindergartens, hospitals and nursing homes were also tackled with funds from the community savings bank at the time. Numerous social, sports and cultural institutions in Salzburg still benefit from the regional commitment of the Salzburger Sparkasse.

ERSTE-Salzburger Sparkasse-Kulturfonds

The establishment of the ERSTE-Salzburger Sparkasse-Kulturfonds was initiated in 1996 by the Salzburger Sparkasse and Erste Bank. By November 2009, more than 300 projects and important institutions of local culture were funded. The purpose of this sponsorship pot is to promote valuable cultural projects for the profile of the festival city of Salzburg, which without this support would be difficult or impossible to implement. All classical and contemporary art branches are taken into account: from theater and visual arts to modern literature and music. The administrative committee decides on the allocation of the funding taking into account the recommendations of a board of trustees.

The second savings bank in Salzburg

The initiative for Die Zwei Sparkasse came from the ERSTE Foundation. The branch in Salzburg of the “Bank for People Without a Bank” was opened in January 2008. It is run by around 50 active and retired employees of the Salzburger Sparkasse on a voluntary basis. The business premises and the infrastructure for operations are provided by the Salzburger Sparkasse. In addition to the Salzburg branch, there are four other branches of the Second Sparkasse in Austria in Vienna , Innsbruck , Klagenfurt and Graz . The Zwei Sparkasse provides its services free of charge to customers who are in financial distress for various reasons, thus helping them to make a fresh start. Most of the Zwei-Sparkasse customers are mediated by the Salzburg Debt Advisory Service. Other important partners in Salzburg are Caritas and the Neustart association.
