Salt house in Budweis

The salt house ( Czech Solnice ) in Budweis ( Czech České Budějovice ), the largest city in South Bohemia and the administrative seat of the South Bohemian Region in the Czech Republic , was built in 1531. The salt house is a protected cultural monument.

history

The building was built in 1531 in the area of the cemetery of the Dominican monastery as a granary for the city and later used as an arsenal . Afterwards it served as a warehouse for the precious commodity salt , which was transported to Bohemia on the Linzer Steig .

The listed, six-storey building is attached to the medieval city wall. The white east facade is closed off by a high stepped gable with small, notch-like openings. In each of the four floors there is an opening at floor level through which the salt was carried into the storage rooms or from there with the help of cable winches . Three puzzling stone heads are placed on the third, fifth and sixth floors of the east facade. A fourth head is on the rear west facade.

The roof is supported by a valuable, high roof structure in the Gothic-Renaissance style. Inside there is a stone slab with the year of construction 1531 on the top floor.

The low extension on the north side is known as the “small salt house” ( malá solnice ).

Today a private motorcycle museum is housed in the salt house.

Salt house at the salt gate

A good 200 meters further south is the large salt house, built in 1564 and rebuilt several times, at Česká ulice (Böhmergasse) No. 66. It served as a transshipment point for loading the salt ships that lay in front of the salt gate in the blind arm of the Maltsch (shortly before its confluence with the Vltava ). This building was still used as a transshipment point at the time of the Budweis – Linz – Gmunden horse-drawn railway .

Salt Gate

The Salt Gate ( Solní branka in Czech ) was built in the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1387. There may have been access to the water at this point. Today's name comes from the large salt house in Böhmergasse.
