Sam Phillips (* 28. January 1962 in Glendale , California , as Leslie Ann Phillips ) is an American singer , musician, composer and actress.

Beginnings

Leslie Phillips discovered her love for music through religion at a young age. At the age of 14 she was already writing her first songs, which were mainly shaped by her beliefs and the problems in her family. After a few years as a background singer, she was signed to the Christian record company Myrrh Records in the 1980s. In 1983 the then 20-year-old singer made her debut with the album Beyond Saturday Night , which was particularly well received in church circles.

Career

In 1987 she met her new producer and later husband T-Bone Burnett . The result of the collaboration was the more pop-heavy album The Turning , which was a turning point for Phillips. Over time, Sam Phillips could no longer identify with the Christian-conservative orientation of her label Myrrh Records, so it came to a separation from the record company. From now on, the musician called herself "Sam" as in her youth and in 1988 found not only a new record company in Virgin Records , but also a new musical style. The Indescribable Wow was released that year and was well received by both audiences and critics.

Four years later, Cruel Inventions was released , which includes a guest appearance by Elvis Costello , a friend of Sam Phillips, and the song Where The Colors Don't Go . Her first Grammy nomination followed in 1994 for the album Martinis and Bikinis , her third Virgin release.

At the peak of her career so far, Phillips ventured into acting and was in the 1995 action film Die Hard: Now all the more to see Katya as the silent terrorist alongside Bruce Willis . 1997 followed a small appearance in Wim Wenders at the end of the violence .

At the request of Amy Sherman-Palladino , the inventor of the television series Gilmore Girls , who wanted an unmistakable musical guide for this dramedy , Sam Phillips was won over for the project. Some of the songs that Phillips contributed to the series appeared on the soundtrack Our Little Corner Of The World . In addition, some songs from their albums were used for the series. Phillips also starred twice in this series.

The 1996 album Omnipop followed, with the exception of the greatest hits album Zero Zero Zero , a longer creative break. With the 2001 album Fan Dance and the three years later A Boot and a Shoe , Sam Phillips turned to more acoustic instrumentation.
