Samuel "Sam" Roberts (* 2. October 1974 in Pointe-Claire , Quebec ) is a Canadian rock - singer-songwriter . He won several Juno Awards and MuchMusic Video Awards .

Career

Roberts was born to parents of South African descent. He attended Loyola High School and later McGill University . Roberts took violin lessons in his youth and later learned the guitar . In 1993 his first band, William , was formed, in which, among others, George Donoso , the current drummer of The Dears , played. After the Canadian music broadcaster MuchMusic ran a short feature on William , the band members moved to Los Angeles to promote their success. In 1996 the group was renamed Northstar before disbanding in 1998 without a label having piqued interest. As soon as Northstar broke up , Roberts moved back to Montreal and recorded the solo debut album Brother Down in the home studio. On August 2, 2002, the Toronto- based music label MapleMusic Recordings released the six-piece EP The Inhuman Condition .

In 2003 the album We Were Born in a Flame followed , this time on the major label Universal Music . The album reached number 2 in the Canadian album charts, the accompanying single Where Have All the Good People Gone? 29th place in the single charts. The next album Chemical City was released in Canada on April 11, 2006, and in the United States on May 16. Guitarist Dave Nugent, bassist James Hall, drummer Josh Trager and keyboardist and guitarist Eric Fares currently play in the Sam Roberts Band .

On January 1, 2008, he appeared in the second third break at the NHL Winter Classic, the NHL's first open-air game on US soil.
