Samuel Baeck

Samuel Baeck (born April 1, 1834 in Kromau , Moravia , Austrian Empire ; died May 16, 1912 in Lissa , German Empire ) was a rabbi and historian .

Life

In 1853 he passed his Abitur in Pressburg , studied at the Talmud universities in Nikolsburg and Pressburg, then at the University of Vienna Orientalia and Philosophy, received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1856 ( The culture of the ancient Indians in comparison with the culture of the Hebrews ), became rabbi in 1857 Šafov (Schaffa), was rabbi in Česká Lípa (Bohemian Leipa, Northern Bohemia) since 1860 and rabbi and religion teacher in Leszno (Lissa) since 1864, where he worked for 48 years.

Samuel Baeck was the son of the rabbi Nathan Baeck (born 1810, died after 1869). He was married to Eva Placzek, a daughter of the Brno Rabbi Abraham Placzek , and one of their children was Rabbi Leo Baeck .

He was a collaborator at the collection of Winter Wishes ( Jewish literature since the end of the canon ) and wrote a. a. The history of the Jewish people and their literature from the Babylonian exile to the present (Lissa 1878; 3rd edition Frankfurt am Main 1906).

Award

In 1903 he received the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle in recognition of his services .
