Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (born January 18, 1733 in Burgdorf , † April 14, 1794 in London ) was a Swiss landscape painter and poet .

life and work

After training as a businessman , Samuel Hieronymus Grimm attended an art academy in Bern , where he studied under Johann Ludwig Aberli . After a stay in France , he traveled to London in 1768. In the following years Grimm earned his living as a drawing teacher and often traveled with his wealthy students through Great Britain - in the course of which he produced numerous sketches and drawings .

Grimm created many templates for copperplate engravings by the Zurich artist Johann Rudolf Holzhalb (1723–1806) to illustrate literary works, e. B. the satires by Aulus Persius Flaccus (Bern 1765), a complete edition of the works of Ewald Christian von Kleist (Bern 1765), collected satires by Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener (Bern 1765), poetic works by Friedrich von Hagedorn (Bern 1766/1771) , a complete edition of the works of Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (Bern 1768), the Swiss songs by Johann Caspar Lavater (Bern 1768), Johann Georg Zimmermanns Vom Nationalstolze (Zurich 1768) or the Complete Poems by Friedrich Rudolph Ludwig von Canitz (Bern 1770).
