Samuel Oppenheim

Samuel Oppenheim (born November 19, 1857 in Braunsberg , Moravia , † August 15, 1928 in Vienna ) was an Austrian astronomer .

Life

In 1875 Oppenheim began studying mathematics , physics and astronomy in Vienna. The teaching examination took place in 1880. He worked from 1881 to 1887 at the Vienna observatory and from 1888 to 1896 at the private Kuffner observatory, also located in Vienna . In 1884 he received his doctorate , and in 1899 he qualified as a professor in theoretical astronomy. After working as a teacher in Prague , he was full professor of astronomy at the University of Vienna from 1911 .

Oppenheim mainly researched celestial mechanics , especially the movements of comets , gravity , the phenomenon of precession, and the kinematics and statistics of stars . He was co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences .

His daughter Hilde was a journalist, translator and historian. She was the second wife of Johann Koplenig .
