Samuel Struck (born December 30, 1671 in Ratzeburg , † March 1, 1720 in Lübeck ) was a German printer.

Live and act

Samuel Struck was a son of the Raschmachers Hans Struck (* around 1630 in Neustadt ; † August 20, 1691 in Ratzeburg) and his wife Anna, née Mechow. Since he got married in Greifswald , he could have lived there for some time, but later went back to Ratzeburg, where he took over a sponsorship in 1701. In 1702 he worked in Moritz Schmalhertz's Lübeck office . On October 18, 1703 he acquired Lübeck citizenship and in the same year asked for a license to run a printing company, which the two existing printers, Schmalhertz 'heirs and Christoph Jäger, filed an objection.

On December 1, 1703, Struck received the desired approval as a printer from the Lübeck Council . He printed numerous funeral sermons, 75 of which can be found in the archive of the city of Lübeck alone. In addition, he copied theological writings of the Lübeck theologians Michael Vermehren , Georg Heinrich Götze and Henrich Scharbau and several evening music by Dieterich Buxtehude . In 1714 he put the Deposito Cornuti Typographici of John Rist .

In 1715, Struck created the new one, auf der Löbl. Kunst-Buchdruckerey useful format book ... his main work. It was a textbook for book printers that contained instructions on formats and the oriental, Greek and Latin alphabet. It contained examples of the most common scripts and a foreword on the history of letters and book printing, mold engraving and copper engraving. The letters SS can be found in the imprint of the book and on the funeral sermons , which suggests that Struck also worked as a form cutter. Because of his skills, he prevailed against the other two book printers in Lübeck.

Struck's son-in-law Johann Nikolaus Thun later took over the business, which existed until 1735.

family

Struck was married three times:

  • His first marriage was to Elisabeth Starck in 1701. She was a daughter of the Greifswald book printer Daniel Starck and his wife Marie, née Evert.
  • On May 4, 1704, he married Auguste Elisabeth Gieseler, who died in September 1715. From this marriage came four children, including the printer Hieronymus Johann Struck .
  • His third marriage was on July 14, 1719, when he married Sibylle Hedwig Prenzselin (Premsel) (born or baptized on July 21, 1660 in Ratzeburg). She was the daughter of Johann Premsel and his wife, who was a widow of the princely Mecklenburg Conterfey David Hille from Ratzeburg. Her father was a court judge from the royal court of Brunswick-Lüneburg.
