San Andrés is a place in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the Canary Island of Tenerife . It is located in the northeast of the island, about 10 km from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife above the coast in the foothills of the Anaga Mountains . San Andrés had about 2,651 inhabitants in 2018.

history

In the times of the indigenous people , the place had several names: Abicor , Abicoré and Ibaute . On January 16, 1850, the previously independent town was incorporated into Santa Cruz. Until 1940, San Andrés could only be reached on a beaten path carved into the rock . One of the well-known Canarian mummies was also found here during excavations .

Fortifications and church

Originally the fortress Castillo de San Andrés existed here, of which the fortress tower was built in 1706, but has since been destroyed by several storms (1740 and 1896). Part of the castle is still intact.

The Iglesia de San Andrés ( Church of San Andrés ) is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the Canary Islands with a remarkable colonial architecture (built between 1505 and 1510).

economy

The residents of San Andrés still make a living from fishing. But tourism has also created numerous jobs on the beach here, although the village itself has remained original. There are no hotels or pensions in the village, only a few apartments can be rented. Spanish courts stopped building major tourist facilities in 1984.

In 1973 the administration of the island filled the Las Teresitas beach with 4 million sacks of Sahara sand and created an infrastructure with showers, parking lots and snack bars. Many residents of the nearby metropolis come to this showcase beach in their free time , where an upstream, harbor-like barrier dampens the surf .
