San Carlos is a place and district in the Department of Concepción in Paraguay on the Río Apa on the border with Brazil . With 747 inhabitants it is the district with the lowest population in Paraguay. It is 590 km from Asunción and 200 km from the city of Concepción.

history

On a small hill near the Apa River, a fort called Fuerte San Carlos del Apa was first founded in 1796 to protect the area from the attacks of the Portuguese from Brazil and the Indians of the Mbayaes who were allied with them. The fort was built with 1,248 round piles and was 47 meters long and 47 meters wide. After continuous attacks by the Portuguese, the fort was rebuilt between 1803 and 1806 at a more convenient location on another hill. It is 70 meters long on each side, the walls are 7 meters high and 2.30 meters wide. In 2016 it was declared a historical cultural asset by the Paraguayan parliament together with the Fuerte Olimpo (Fuerte Borbón) . The San Carlos District was established on June 25, 2008.

economy

The residents mainly practice livestock and agriculture.

Infrastructure

In December 2010 a drinking water supply was set up for the first time in the village. This is a drinking water treatment of the river water of the Río Apa. There are three primary schools and one secondary school, the Colegio Nacional de San Carlos . There is a ferry across the Río Apa that also transports individual cars. In May 2014, Paraguay and Brazil agreed to build a bridge that connects San Carlos with Caracol in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul . The place also has a disused airstrip for light aircraft, which, according to Mayor Luis Schupp, is used by drug smugglers.
