San Diego is a place and a municipality in the Zacapa department in Guatemala . The place is about 160 km east-northeast of Guatemala City and about 65 km southwest of the city of Zacapa . The place is south of the Atlantic highway CA 9 in the valley of the Río San Diego at an altitude of 640 m. It can be reached from CA 9 via an asphalt road that branches off west of Cabañas (still in El Progreso ) to the south.
The 112 km² large municipality extends in the mountains in the extreme southwest of Zacapa. It has a total of around 8,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Ladinos . In addition to the main town of San Diego, the municipality consists of the nine "rural communities" ( Aldeas ) El Porvenir, Venecia, Santa Elena, El Terrero, Pampur, La Hierba Buena, La Ensenada, San Antonio and Las Delicias .
In the north, San Diego borders on the Municipio Cabañas, in the east on the Departamento Chiquimula and in the south and west on the Department Jalapa .
