San Fernando is a city in Chile . According to official estimates, it has 58,598 inhabitants (as of 2017) and is the capital of the Colchagua province . It is located in the Región del Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins .

Geography and climate

San Fernando is located on the Río Tinguiririca , a left tributary of the Río Rapel , around 132 km south of the capital Santiago on the Panamericana and on Chile's most important longitudinal railway line.

The average temperature in the year is 14 ° C. The amount of rain is 490 mm / year.

history

The city was founded on May 17, 1742 by Governor José Antonio Manso de Velasco . The national hero in the War of Independence Manuel Rodríguez (1785-1818) was erected in the city. On February 12, 1817, he captured San Fernando from the Spanish. The famous Battle of Chacabuco also took place on the same day , but around 50 km north without his participation.

In 1840 the city became the capital of the Colchagua Province .
