San Juan is a district of Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon . The international airport Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vigneta , the excursion destination Qista Cocha (swimming lake and zoo) and the road to Nauta with many excursion resorts are located in this district .

San Juan is the administrative seat of the district of San Juan Bautista in the province of Maynas ( Loreto region ). In the 2017 census, the population was 99,151.

Many people in San Juan live in slums ; the current situation can be described as follows: Many residents live in great poverty and below the subsistence level of around CHF 120 per month. There is very high unemployment (around 35%). Around 45% of the population earn their living with casual work and informal services (e.g. selling fruit on the street corner). There are signs of a decline in cultural values and family systems. The poor health care leads to increased child mortality and infectious diseases . The rural exodus causes a high rate of immigration in this region . Another problem is the inadequate infrastructure : there is no running water , only unpaved roads and frequent power outages. Indifference to personal, family and neighborly resources (e.g. fallow backyards, free time) is common.

Fiesta San Juan

The city festival San Juan takes place annually on June 21st . Among other things, the regional specialty Juanes is offered.
