San Pablo Villa de Mitla (mostly just Mitla ) is a place with about 8,500 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality ( municipio ) with about 13,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Oaxaca . Since 2015 the place has been classified as Pueblo Mágico .

Location and climate

The place San Pablo Villa de Mitla is located in the Valle de Oaxaca approx. 44 km (driving distance) southeast of the city of Oaxaca de Juarez at an altitude of approx. 1680  m . The climate is dry and warm; the overall rather sparse rain (approx. 625 mm / year) falls mainly during the summer half-year.

The local residents, some of whom have immigrated from the surrounding area, usually speak Zapotec or Nahuatl dialects.

economy

Mitla was an important economic and trading center for the Zapotec Indians even in pre- Hispanic times. The people of the region still live largely self-sufficient from the yields of their fields (corn, wheat) and gardens (potatoes, beans, tomatoes, chilli, etc.). Cattle breeding was only practiced on a small scale (chickens, turkeys); it now plays an important role in the surrounding villages. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the village.

The Indians living here offered little resistance to the Aztec and Spanish occupations.

Attractions

  • The main attractions of the place are the palaces of the pre-colonial site of Mitla .
  • The three-domed parish church of San Pablo , standing on a pre-Hispanic platform, is consecrated to the Apostle Paul and dates from the 16th / 17th centuries. Century. The dome-covered nave is rather unusual for Mexico.
  • The Museo Frisell de Arte Zapoteca Mitla located in the center of the village presents finds from the ruins.
Surroundings
  • The palace ruins of the archaeological site of Yagul are only eight miles away. The Zapotec tombs of Zaachila are located about 15 km south of Oaxaca.
