description

Overview

The little church has two aisles with two apses . The core building and oldest part in the north dates from the 11th century; The building was first mentioned in 1249. The nave , west facade and apse of the original building are decorated with pilaster strips . In the 12th century, the chapel was expanded to include the shortened southern nave with a small apse.

When Mannerist frescoes from the Tarilli workshop from the late 16th or early 17th century were replaced in 1945, late Romanesque wall paintings came to light in the apse and archway of the core building . As was customary in the Ticino country churches of the High Middle Ages , they show the Majestas Domini , including the apostles. The paintings were transferred to a canvas that now hangs in front of the side altar.

An annunciation group appears in the apse arch , on the south wall Nicholas is depicted in bishop's robe and next to Christophorus , at whose feet fish frolic in the water. The representation of Remigius and the Mother of God date from the 15th century.

The block altar with stucco - sculptures decorated Romanesque. On the front, framed by half-columns, stand two apostles with antique robes. Their heads have been destroyed, the bodies are identical and have been designed with stencils or molds . Both hold a book in their left hand, the right one is raised in greeting. The robes and the large hands point back to the Ottonian times of origin, the compact body proportions rather to the first decades of the 12th century. The altar was partially reconstructed in the 1940s by the sculptor Giovanni Genucci from the Blenio Valley.
