San Rocco is a Roman Catholic church in Tirano at the entrance of the Poschiavo , near the Swiss border in the Italian province of Sondrio , Lombardy region and is now on the outskirts. The church belongs to the ecclesiastical region of Lombardy , the Diocese of Como , and is dedicated to Saint Roch .

Location and history

The Church of San Rocco is in Via San Rocco at around 467 m. ü. M. not far from Poschiavino , around 550 m from the Basilica Madonna di Tirano . It is about 1.8 km as the crow flies to the old town of Tirano and about 1 km to the Swiss border and about 1.5 km to Campocologn . To the east, above San Rocco about 870 m as the crow flies, is the village of Roncaiola at 802 m. ü. M.

According to tradition, the building was in 1526 or 1531 on behalf of Gian Giacomo Medici (nephew of Pope Pius IV. To be built) as a small fortress to subsequently control of the Valtellina or Valchiavenna and thus a part of Graubünden again gain. Gian Giacomo Medici had sent an envoy to Tirano disguised as a monk to convince the population to build a church dedicated to the patron saint of plague victims. In reality, however, a small military base was to be built. The inhabitants of Tirano recognized the intention after the construction began and blocked further construction and expelled the alleged monk. In 1589, Bishop Felizian Ninguarda referred to the church as "imperfecta". San Rocco was only completed as a church at a later date by the residents of Tirano with the financial contribution of the Salis family.

building

The church of San Rocco is said to have received its characteristic octagonal shape from this original conception as a fortification. The buttresses of the church are very massive. The octagonal shape also gives the church the shape of a temple . The Mariano Spasmo church in the center of Tirano is also octagonal in shape .

The main stone portal with inlays bears the date 1751 and the Latin inscription AB UTRAQUE LUE PROTEGE NOS ( German : Protect our two wings . Wings in the sense of body and soul ).

The octagonal main building forms a large hall with alternating square and semicircular chapels. The corners are formed on the inside by slim pilasters that support a cornice on which the star vault is placed. Round windows in the lunettes provide natural light for the room.

The furnishings are reduced to a pulpit and simple confessionals. There is a statue of San Rocco on the high altar. On the side altar there are two statues of bishops and an altarpiece with the Virgin Mary and Child and depictions of saints . Originally there were also frescoes that were mentioned by Bishop Agostino Maria Neuroni in 1752, but which are no longer visible today.

An oil painting shows Christ on the cross between St. Sebastian , the Mother of God , St. Francis of Assisi and St. Rocco. It is assumed that it was commissioned during the plague wave from 1635 to 1637 and in the background there is probably a panorama of Tirano at that time.

The bell tower was built in 1645 on the southern front. Further outbuildings flank the church building.

The church is still used for worship .
