History and description

Side view from the south with the Janus stone

The church was probably built over the remains of a Pagan temple and is one of the oldest churches in Paciano. Inside the rectangular, single-nave church, on the wall behind the altar, is the fresco Cristo in Trono tra San Giovanni Battista e San Pietro by Giovan Battista Caporali , painted in 1508 or 1510. The fresco has the dimensions 256 × 230 cm. The wall was built around 1508 and separates the presbytery from the sacristy , which previously belonged to the church. The stucco work around the fresco by Caporali and the side altars in the church hall, which is one step lower, date from the 18th century.

The facade of the church is made of stone, the central portal is made of Pietra Serena sandstone and has the inscription AD 1885 on the architrave . The campanile with the two bells dates from 1949. On the right-hand side, the side facing south, there is a stone image of Janus (Italian Giano ) of unknown date. From 1949 to 1950 the church was restored.

According to legend, St. Mustiola of Chiusi sought refuge here from her persecutors in 270. Outside the church there is a metal cross on a small rock on which the imprints of the saints are supposed to be depicted.
