The region is part of the parent Central Coast AVA , San Francisco Bay AVA, and Santa Clara Valley AVA . The wine-growing region lies at the foot of the Diablo Range of hills . The climate of the San Ysidro District is significantly cooler than other areas of the Santa Clara Valley . The vineyards are cooled by the sea breezes from the Pacific over the Pajaro River , so that the early ripening grape variety Merlot can be grown here.
