The Trichodontidae are a fish family from the group of perch relatives , which occurs with only two species in the northern Pacific . They were traditionally assigned to the dragon fish (Trachinoidei), but, according to more recent analyzes, belong to the bull relatives .
features
Both types of the family are a maximum of 30 centimeters long. They have a laterally compressed, high-backed and scaleless body and a large, protruding mouth . The sideline is high on the body and follows the course of the two dorsal fins. The pectoral fins are large. A swim bladder is missing.
Fin formula : dorsal 1 VIII-XVI, dorsal 2 0-I / 12-20, anal 0-I / 28-32.
Way of life
The fish are nocturnal and mostly half-buried in the sandy or muddy bottom during the day. They stay at depths of up to 400 meters. Trichodontidae feed on small invertebrates .
