Sandy Stewart (* 10. July 1937 as Sandra Galitz in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American singer, mainly in the pop music scene was active.
Artistic career
Sandy Stewart came into contact with the music scene at the age of 14 when she appeared on a music show on a local television station in her hometown of Philadelphia. At 16, she sang regularly on a jazz show on NBC radio with pianist Dick Hyman and bassist Eddie Safranski, among others . Sandy Stewart began recording records in 1952, but was committed to undemanding light music by the producers. In 1958 she took on several titles for East West with arranger Ray Ellis . The accompanists for this session included King Curtis (ts), Dick Hyman (p), Al Caiola , Everett Barksdale (git), Wendell Marshall (kb), Panama Francis (dr). In 1962 she was a band vocalist for Benny Goodman .
During her entire recording career, she never got a long-term record deal, although she released several singles with well-known record companies such as 20th Century , Okeh , Atco and United Artists . Their only title which it into the Hot 100 of Billbord managed, which was song My Coloring Book , that of Don Costa produced in 1962 by the record company Colpix was published. It was represented in the Hot 100 for ten weeks and achieved its best rating with number 20. Despite her moderate record success, Stewart had numerous appearances on television shows with Perry Como , Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson , as well as in the nightclubs of Las Vegas . After her marriage to Morris Charlap, the composer of Peter Pan, she retired from the music business for years. It was not until the mid-1980s that she started working again on various projects in the music scene, for example with the album Sandy Stewart and Family or an album with songs by Jerome Kern . In 2005, at the age of 67, she recorded an album with her son, jazz pianist Bill Charlap .
In addition to her recording activities, Sandy Stewart was also active in film and television. In 1959 she took on a leading role in the musical film Go, Johnny, Go!
