Sangue Toureiro (dt .: "bullfighter blood") is a film of the Portuguese director Augusto Fraga of 1958 . It was the first color film of Portuguese cinema .

action

The large landowner and cattle breeder Jerónimo de Vinhas wants his son Eduardo to be a rider in bullfighting. This, however, eludes his father and goes to Lisbon with the fado singer Maria da Graça. When his father denies him further financial support, Eduardo becomes a bullfighter. At the request of Eduardo's mother, Maria da Graça then left him and accepted an offer to perform abroad, which brought her fame. Eduardo is injured during a bullfight and is nursed to health by Isabel, who loves him. Isabel forgives him for his immoral past. They then get married, and Eduardo dedicates himself to the administration of his father's property.

reception

The film was supposed to give a new success to the entertainment film, which had fallen into crisis and was extremely successful in the 30s and 40s. However, with its uninspired script, the film was too mediocre and it failed to hit the box office.

The state television of the RTP , introduced in 1957, had replaced the cinema in the favor of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime. With this film, the film producer Manuel Queiroz tried to repeat earlier successes of Portuguese cinema. Sangue Toureiro was the first color film in Portugal, the main roles were also cast with the popular singer Amália Rodrigues and the popular bullfighter Diamantino Viseu , and the popular comic actors Raul Solnado and Fernanda Borsatti were seen in supporting roles.

But the audience had already turned away from the domestic cinema, and the weak plot of the film could only attract few people to the cinema, despite the prominent cast. It was only after a few decades and nostalgically transfigured that the film was able to attract a little attention, especially for the documentary recordings of car races in Monsanto , the original architecture of Lisbon Airport , and the traditional ferry and cargo boats on the which have now disappeared Tagus river .

Sangue Toureiro has been shown several times on Portuguese television channels since the 1990s, and released by Lusomundo on a VHS cassette and later (2008) on DVD .
