Saint George Church

The Sankt-Georg-Kirche is the Protestant church in the village of Westdorf in Saxony-Anhalt , which belongs to the city of Aschersleben .

Architecture and history

The church was built in the late Gothic style in the second half of the 15th century. To the west of the nave is the rectangular church tower, the lower part of which is of Romanesque origin. The nave closes on three sides to the east. In the south and east walls there are pointed arched windows with tracery . To the south of the nave there is a vestibule whose portal is dated to 1499. On the outside there is a coat of arms with three family coats of arms and a donor inscription from 1499 referring to the founder Hermen Wilden . Also noteworthy is a sandstone tomb for Pastor Käsberg, who died in 1718, and his wife Anna Elisabeth. From 1718 the historian and Low German poet Caspar Abel was pastor at the Sankt-Georg-Kirche.

Interior design

The interior of the ship is spanned by a flat ceiling. Boxes flank the 18th century organ gallery. A carved reredos in the church dates back to around 1500 . This is probably the oldest piece of furniture in the church and shows the coronation of Mary under delicate canopies made of tracery in its central shrine . To the side and above this representation there are images of various saints. On the left is the adoration of the Magi, on the right George's fight with the dragon. The predella shows Our Lady in a halo surrounded by six apostles. The back of the wings is decorated with a representation of the Annunciation.

There are several epitaphs in the church . Concealed by the gallery is an epitaph with a relief figure from the Renaissance period of Anna Margareta von Stammer , who died in 1570 , as well as an asymmetrical epitaph made of sandstone for Hieronymus Burchard von Stammer, who died in 1747, and his wife, Charlotte Christiane von Stammer, who died in 1754 Carlowitz .
