It is located on Via dei Tribunali before the junction with Castel Capuano in the historic center of Naples, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

history

facade

The Complesso Monumentale di Santa Maria della Pace was originally built around an old noble palace, which was built at the beginning of the 15th century by Giovanni Caracciolo based on plans by Andrea Ciccione . The associated hospital of the Brothers of Mercy of St. Giovanni di Dio ( Ospedale dei frati Ospedalieri di San Giovanni di Dio ) was built in 1587, including the Sala del Lazzaretto . Remains of the former palace can still be seen on the Gothic portal to the monastery building and on the 15th century masonry in the vestibule. The Complesso also has two cloisters .

The church was built by Pietro De Marino between 1629 and 1659; It received its nickname "della Pace" (of peace ) because in the year of its completion the Peace in the Pyrenees between Louis XIV of France and Philip IV of Spain was sanctioned.

description

church

The classic two-storey facade is structured by pilaster strips with Corinthian capitals made of dark piperno , a volcanic rock that was often used in Naples.

apse

The interior in the shape of a Latin cross has a single nave with three chapels on each side. After the earthquake of 1732 the church was renovated by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro . The church is kept almost entirely in white (the traditional color of peace) and gets its effect almost exclusively from the elegance of the architecture with its vaults and a late Baroque stucco decoration of relative simplicity, with figures of angels in the upper areas of the apse and crossing and some figures of saints in the niches of the lower wall zones.

dome

The apse is the work of Nicola Tagliacozzi Canale . The ceiling fresco from the 18th century is only about 80% preserved. The floor of a combination of brick-red Cotto - and colorful Majolica Tiles was of Donato Massa created from designs by Vaccaro.

Sala del Lazzaretto

The well-known " Lazarettsaal " can be reached via a large staircase on the left in the vestibule.

Sala del Lazzaretto

The hall got its name because it was one of the few places in Naples to receive people suffering from serious diseases such as leprosy , plague or other scourges of humanity. The room is 60 meters long, 10 meters wide and 12 meters high, and at the end there is an 18th century marble altar that used to separate the main room from the doctors' office. The balcony, which runs halfway along the walls, was designed to prevent infection when serving food and drink to plague victims.

The frescoes in the vault and between the windows were painted by Andrea Viola and Giacinto Diano , they show the Virgin Mary and saints of the Order of St. Giovanni di Dio.
