Sariwŏn is a city in North Korea with 154,942 inhabitants, the capital of the Hwanghae-pukto province , an industrial city, transport hub and cultural center with a university , theater and museums .
geography
Geographical location
The city is located in the south of the country, 57 kilometers south of the capital Pyongyang , in the province of Hwanghae-pukto an average of eleven meters above sea level . The geographic coordinates are 38.51 degrees north and 125.76 degrees east.
history
Sariwon was from 1910 bis 1945 occupied by Japanese troops and suffered during the Korean War ( 1950 - 1953 ) heavy destruction. Large parts of the city were damaged in a bomb attack by American planes on July 26, 1950 . After the war, Sariwon developed into an industrial and transport center in the region.
Culture and sights
Particularly noteworthy is the Eungjinjŏn hall of the Sŏngbulsa temple, which consists of seven small rooms (kan). It was built in 898 and rebuilt in 1327 . With its colored Danchŏng patterns that decorate the woodwork inside, it is a typical example of the architecture of the Goryeo period ( 918 - 1392 ). The colors red and green predominate in the numerous complex dragon and lotus flower paintings.
Economy and Infrastructure

Important branches of the economy are mechanical engineering and the chemical industry. Grain and rice are grown in the vicinity of the city . Hana Electronics also has offices here .
traffic
Sariwon is a traffic junction with road and rail connections to the capital Pyongyang ( Pyongyang-Kaesong Expressway ) and other cities in the country. The Sariwon trolleybus crosses the city from east to west.
education
The city has a university as well as several colleges and technical schools.
Sports
The Rimyongsu Sports Group is a soccer club based in Sariwon. The home games take place in the Sariwon Youth Stadium .
