Nightscene in Yoshiwara ( 吉 原 格子 先 之 図 ) by Katsushika Ōi, which was mentioned in the credits

Sarusuberi ( Japanese 百日 紅 ) is a manga series by Hinako Sugiura from 1983 to 1987. In a historical drama, it tells the story of Katsushika Ōi (called Ō-Ei), who worked in the shadow of her father Hokusai . The anime film adaptation by director Keiichi Hara , which was made in 2015, became known as Miss Hokusai .

While the manga template tells individual episodes in three volumes that do not necessarily have a connection, the film follows Ō-Ei and her life in Edo while she works in her father's studio .

action

The film opens in Edo in 1814, during the Edo episode. Ō-Ei is one of four daughters of the painter Tetsuzo, who is later known as Hokusai. The film is set at the time when Ō-Ei is just growing up, while her father (around fifty) is already a recognized artist in the country. The studio where they both work is cluttered. She goes to eat with her mother, but sleeps in the studio. Tetsuzo is known for his painting skills, such as painting the Great Bodhidharma or two sparrows on a grain of rice. Ō-Ei has her father's talent and perseverance. She often paints at her table without signing her works in order to be able to complete the orders. She doesn't get any recognition for her work.

The film alternates between life Ō ice cream and her father and the artists who come to visit. Especially Zenjirō Ikeda ( Keisai Eisen ), who later became known for Bijin-ga and Kuninao Utagawa. Several scenes deal with Japanese mythology and Buddhism in Japan.

The film also deals with the relationship between Ō-Ei, Tetsuzo and Ō-Eis half-sister from Tetsuzo's first marriage. She was blind from birth, but her father never visits her because he is afraid of death and illness. Ō-Ei, on the other hand, takes care of her, takes her to the Ryogoku Bridge, describes the landscape to her and shows her the world through feeling, hearing and seeing. At the same time, Ō-Ei remains single and has no interest in a romantic relationship. Her father gives her orders for erotic Shungas , which are then rated by the customers as cold and callous.

When Ō-Egi's little sister becomes ill, she persuades her father to finally visit her. He even paints her a picture of a patron god. But the little girl does not recover and dies. Her soul visited the studio in the form of a gust of wind, which on the floor a Tsubaki - flower leaves, as she gave her older sister her one.

At the end of the film, faded-in texts explain the further fate of the main characters. Tetsuzo, who became Hokusai, died at the age of 90. Ō-Ei survived him and traveled a lot, but no one knows where she died.
