Sascha Priester (born April 10, 1972 in Eggenfelden ) is a German journalist , historian and classical archaeologist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Sascha Priester studied Classical Archeology , Ancient History and Provincial Roman Archeology in Munich and Cologne from 1992 to 1997 at the humanistic Hans Carossa High School in Landshut . After completing his master's thesis on mythical images on Roman grave structures, he spent several years researching ancient high-rise buildings at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome and published his dissertation on this topic. One focus was the research and re-evaluation of the architecture and furnishings of ancient insulae , including the multi-storey insula dell'Aracoeli on the Capitol Hill. During his stay in Italy he worked in the editorial department of the archaeological specialist publication Römische Mitteilungen .

From 1997 Priester wrote for the history magazine PM History , for which he worked from 2002 as editor and later as chief editor. Publications and editorial collaboration with the magazines PM Questions & Answers , Geo Epoche , Stern and the Italian Focus Storia followed.

From 2007 Sascha Priester was editor-in-chief of PM History . In 2008 and 2009 he was responsible for the special edition PM History Special and the knowledge magazine PM Perspective (partial edition with DVD). From 2010 to mid-2012 Sascha Priester was editor-in-chief of PM History , PM Perspective , PM Biography and the special editions PM History Special and PM History Collection that he founded . The knowledge titles and media brands of the PM group that he manages print and online were edited and published by the publishing house Gruner + Jahr in the Munich publishing group.

In collaboration with dtv , from 2004 to 2007 he conceived the book series Stories on History and presented selected articles by PM History authors in paperback format. In cooperation with audio media verlag GmbH, he published our big moments in 2009 and 2010 . German history from 1945 to the present day and The Ancient Egypt two PM History audio books as CD box sets, in which Sascha Priester also appeared as a speaker.

Sascha Priester is Scientific Advisory Board member of the pay TV broadcaster HISTORY . For the presentation of the HISTORY Award , which is aimed at schoolchildren with a call for multimedia history projects, he is a member of the jury and regularly also acts as its spokesperson. In addition, he appears in print, radio, TV and the Internet as a contact person on historical topics and questions. Sascha Priester also writes articles, books and interviews on historical, political or musical-cultural aspects (among others with Luigi Coppa, Hans Hass , Max Mannheimer , Wolfgang Niedecken , Thilo Sarrazin and Katharina Wagner ). In the three-part documentary film series Guardians of Heritage in 2017, people and projects were presented who are committed to the protection or restoration of cultural assets and the cultural world heritage; As a HISTORY expert, Sascha Priester explained terms and relationships between these topics in a multi-part online video series.

As a lecturer in classical archeology, Sascha Priester has been teaching courses at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich since 2002 ; The focus is on the research of ancient sculpture, new questions on the topography of the city of Rome as well as the medial communication and the relevance of archeology, historical research and science to the public. Since 2015 he has also been teaching on general art history topics and media-digital presentation techniques. He is also active in editorial, conceptual and consulting roles for companies.
