Considered a fine art in his master's thesis on the subject of HipHop. Lyrical forms of expression in German-speaking rap , he showed the literary relevance of rap texts and made a name for himself as a journalist on the subject of hip hop . He has been a critical companion of the German hip-hop scene since the early 1990s. His book 20 Years of HipHop , edited with the musician Hannes Loh , was described by the daily newspaper taz as a “standard work on hip-hop in Germany” and has been reissued twice in an updated form. Verlan gives workshops for teachers and young people on hip hop, rap and creative writing. He gives lectures on the connection between hip-hop and poetry, on rhyme improvisation and competition in literature.

Together with Almut Schnerring, he publishes and raises awareness of the issues of gender equality and role stereotypes . Under the term “pink-light-blue trap”, which they coined, role models in children's books, cognitive distortions and unconscious thought patterns in articles, radio broadcasts, lectures and training courses are addressed or in the context of the award ceremonies of a golden fence post - the negative price for absurd gender marketing - publicly criticized. The Equal Care Day , launched in 2016, was also initiated by Verlan and Schnerring , a day of action that draws attention to the lack of appreciation and unfair distribution of care work. In their book Equal Care. About Welfare and Democracy , they presented an inventory of the care situation in Germany in 2020, described the smooth transition between private and professional care work , showed the connection between the gender pay gap and the gender care gap and described phenomena like Mental Load and Care Chains - the increasing outsourcing of care duties in global care chains .

Sascha Verlan lives with Almut Schnerring and their three children in Bonn.
