The satratoxins are potent mycotoxins (mold toxins), which are produced by the tubular fungus Stachybotrys chartarum and belong to the group of trichothecenes . The name satratoxin goes back to the former mushroom name Stachybotrys atra , which is no longer used in the current naming of the mushroom species and is now called Stachybotrys chartarum . There are three satratoxins ("Satratoxin F", "Satratoxin G" and "Satratoxin H").

The ingestion of satratoxins can lead to systemic symptoms of intoxication, which can range from irritation of the oral and nasal mucous membranes to diarrhea , fatigue , chest pain and increased temperature to pulmonary bleeding . It is possible that the effects of the toxins may not appear until hours after ingesting a contaminated food.

Antidote

There are currently no antidotes or rapid detection methods for satratoxins. The only treatment option is the administration of adsorbents such as activated charcoal , which bind the toxins in the body and limit their effectiveness.
