The Sauerland Heritage Association is a home club , which was founded on 3. September 1921 in Wennemen was decided.

Development and organization

It was originally an "Association of Studying Sauerlanders." The initiative to found it came from Franz Hoffmeister from Ramsbeck , who was soon joined by other young Sauerlanders from the youth and homeland protection movement. He was there also a reaction to the oppressive experiences of the founders during the First World War . The destruction of the pre-war order should be contrasted with regional identity and Christian values. The founding statute therefore stated:

“On the basis of Christianity, preservation, strengthening and deepening of every justified Sauerland peculiarity; Instruction about local nature, history of folklore and works of Sauerland literature and art; Defense against all excesses and confusions of popular beliefs, protection of the local landscape as well as natural and art monuments. "

Albert Kleffmann became the first chairman . In the twenties the number of members increased sharply. During this time, the skepticism against changes in lifestyles and the criticism of modernity as a whole played a central role. With the magazine Trutznachtigall (1919–1927) and Heimwacht (1928–1932), the federal government had its own publication organ. Parts of the association were quite close to ethnic ideas. Organizationally connected to the Heimatbund was the Sauerland Artists' Circle . Overall, however, the pronounced Christian orientation during the National Socialist rule led to an interruption of the association's activities.

Initially initiated primarily by Theodor Pröpper from Balve , the Sauerland Heimatbund was re-established in 1950.

He is a member of the Westphalian Homeland Federation . Throughout Germany, over 3000 members are organized in the Sauerland Heimatbund. At the same time, the association is the umbrella organization for numerous local local historical and local history associations such as: Balver Heimwacht, Arnsberger Heimatbund, Sunderner Heimatbund, Kreisring Olpe Sauerländer Heimatbund.

The area of activity of the association includes the historically grown former Electoral Cologne Sauerland , located in the rural south-east of Westphalia . Today it essentially corresponds to the area of the district of Olpe and the Hochsauerland district as well as the towns of Balve and Menden in the Märkischen district and Warstein , Rüthen and the municipality of Möhnesee in the district of Soest .

The association publishes the quarterly magazine Sauerland (since 1968; 1951 Ruf der Heimat , 1952–1967 Sauerlandruf ). She deals intensively with the work areas of the association. In addition, the association is the editor and co-editor of numerous regional historical writings and studies.
