Theodor Pröpper (born May 26, 1896 in Balve ; † July 31, 1979 there ) was a German composer , church musician and local poet .
family
The Pröpper family came from Beckum near Balve, his father was a house painter. Theodor Pröpper attended elementary school in Balve and then trained as a painter. Theodor Pröpper was the father of the theologian Thomas Pröpper (1941–2015).
Life
From 1912 to 1914 he studied at the church music school in Paderborn . In 1914 he began working as an organist in the parish church of St. Blasius in Balve. Pröpper interrupted his organist activity in Balve for further studies at the State Academy of Music in Munich . There he passed his exam - with distinction - from the Reger student Joseph Haas . In addition to this training, he was a private composition student of Gottfried Rüdinger . After completing his studies, he took up his post as church musician in Balve again in 1925. After the Second World War, Pröpper was elected Deputy Mayor of Balver on February 7, 1946. In 1949 Pröpper was one of the founders of the Balver Höhlenspiele community . Theodor Pröpper was buried in the cemetery in Balve. His literary estate is in the parish archive of St. Blasius Balve .
meaning
In 1921 he was one of the founders of the Balver Heimwacht and in the same year with Franz Hoffmeister one of the founders of the Sauerland Heimatbund . On the occasion of the founding in 1922, the first cultural performances in the Balver cave were organized by him and Franz Hoffmeister.
For the new version of the diocesan chant introduced in 1948 for the Archdiocese of Paderborn , Sursum Corda , he compiled the organ book, which was published two years later. In 1953 the Archbishop of Paderborn and later Cardinal Lorenz Jaeger appointed him church music director.
From 1930 to 1934 Pröpper was a member of the city council for the center . As a declared Nazi opponent, he was deposed by the National Socialists . Josefa Berens , who later gave herself the stage name "Berens-Totenohl" and belonged to the völkisch Sauerland artist circle (SKK), had already declared in 1930 that Pröpper, as a Catholic "Heimatbund-Proleten", had to be "shut up". When the council of the town of Balve was only granted an advisory function in 1934 , it stopped working on the council. When the Balver Home Guard into line was, he put in protest in 1934 chaired the home guard down and let the note in the log.
After the Second World War he was one of those who worked tirelessly for the Sauerland Heimatbund to be re-established in the summer of 1950. "In the following years he tried his best to give the idea of home a new, permanent foundation. That was not easy, because for some the term home still exuded the evil odor of the blood and soil ideology, for others it was always valid Increasing fascination with technology as the epitome of backwardness and provinciality. Pröpper, on the other hand, addressed and wrote with a lot of rhetorical temperament, for example in an essay Modern Homeland Care . In it he primarily addresses the youth ".
