The Oberliga season 1973/74 was the first season of the Oberliga as a 3rd division. The main round was played in two regional groups. In the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , the EC Peiting prevailed.

The league was played in two regional groups, the south group comprised 13 participants and the north group 12 participants. The league was made up of the seven top division clubs who had not qualified for the new 2nd Bundesliga, the teams from the 1972/73 Regionalliga and four promoted teams from the national leagues.

The EV Mittenwald from the Regionalliga Süd had decided not to participate in the Oberliga. Likewise, the HTSV Bremen had renounced the Regionalliga Nord and played in the new Regionalliga Nord. The ice hockey department of TSV Peiting had become self-employed as EC Peiting .

Both groups were played as double rounds. Then the first two groups played in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga from the direct promoted to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga 1974/75 .
