The Saur Mountains ( Russian Саур ) is a mountain range in Central Asia along the border between Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China .
The mountain range is located southeast of Lake Saissan and runs in an east-west direction along the border between East Kazakhstan and Xinjiang . The mountain range has a length of 140 km. At the eastern end of the mountain range is the Ulungursee . The Tarbagatai Mountains form a western continuation of the Saur Mountains. The highest peak of the Saur Mountains is the Mustau with a height of 3816 m .
Volcanic deposits, slate , limestone , sandstone and granitoids occur in the mountains . On the mountain ridges there are mountain meadows as well as typical Siberian uncontaminated hills. Part of the Saur Mountains is glaciated. The glacier area is 16.6 km².
The north flank has the character of a low mountain range . There are forests with Siberian larches as well as Schrenks spruces and Siberian firs .
The lower elevations and the southern flank of the Saur Mountains are characterized by a steppe and heathland landscape.
Coal deposits and oil shale deposits were found in the Saur Mountains.
