Savoonga is a village on the north central coast of Saint Lawrence Island in the US state of Alaska . Gambell is located 63 km further west on the northwest tip of the island . In 2016, Savoonga had an estimated 705 inhabitants.
The area has been inhabited by Yupik for around 2000 years , who now make up 95% of the population and operate subsistence farming , primarily in the form of hunting whales and walruses . Reindeer have also been introduced since 1900, but they are not kept in herds.
