Gambell is a place in the Nome Census Area in Alaska in the extreme northwest of the Saint Lawrence Island , 265 km southwest of Cape Prince of Wales , the western tip of the Seward Peninsula .
The small village has an estimated 701 inhabitants (as of 2016). There is a small airport with Gambell Airport , from which the airlines Bering Air and Era Alaska Savoonga fly to the central north of the island. Gambell is located at about 63.46 ° north latitude just south of the Arctic Circle . In winter temperatures down to −40 ° C, in summer up to +5 ° C.
The name Gambell goes back to the first missionary and teacher couple on the island, Vene and Nellie Gambell, who perished in a shipwreck in the spring of 1898.
